Comments
The Rum Rebellion of 1808 was provoked by the clash of two strong personalities, the ambitious ex-military John Macarthur, and the cantankerous governor William Bligh. Bligh's attempt to break the economic stranglehold of the powerful 'Rum Corps' in the fledgling colony of New South Wales led to Australia's only successful military coup. These events came to a head on 26th January 1808. This date is celebrated every year and is known as Australia Day although not for this reason.
