From the 16th century, a large number of Ming dynasty coins were imported to Japan. Hongwu coins with the mintmark Zhi are not actual coins of the Ming dynasty, but are rather imitation pieces produced at Kajiki for the Satsuma Domain, which had very active trade with the Kingdom of Ryukyu.
The exact date of these pieces varies by sources. Hartill says these were produced in the second half of the 16th century, while it is also possible these were produced from the late-16th to early-17th century. However, on Zeno, it is said that casting at Kajiki went from 1655-1694.
