The Onion Market is a traditional public festival held on the fourth Monday of November each year. Farmers bring more than 50 tonnes of onion and garlic in artistically woven plaits to Bern. The Onion Market started around the 19th century, but its origins are much older, dating back to the 15th century, in a fourteen-day autumn fair (Saint Martin's market).
