The beetle's bright color acts as a warning signal to potential predators: it tells them that this insect is not tasty, even for an insectivore. In fact, when threatened, the ladybug plays dead and its legs secrete a liquid with a repulsive taste. Unlike our jaws, the ladybug's mandibles move sideways when it chews. In the course of its two to three years of life, a ladybug eats thousands of aphids, making it a very useful insect in the garden, especially when roses are present! Concealed beneath its spotted elytra, the ladybug's wings can reach 85 beats per second, keeping the insect flying for up to two hours. If you see an orange or yellow ladybug rather than a red one, or one with an "M"-shaped mark on the back of its head, it may be an Asian ladybug, introduced to us at the end of the 20th century.
