The African leopard is a subspecies of the leopard, one of the five extant species of large cats in the genus Panthera. Leopards live in sub-Saharan Africa, Western and Central Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and Southeast and East Asia. The African leopard references the subspecies that inhabits the African continent south of the Saharan Desert. The coating of the leopard can vary greatly in the wild from pale yellow and deep gold to tawny or even all-black. The spots on a leopards body as known as rosettes.
