This type was first discovered in 1932, when a hoard was found in Chengde, Hebei. The exact purpose of these pieces is uncertain, but one theory is that they were used for trade with the Xiongnu (Huns), who were located north of the State of Yan. Another theory is that these were a local variation of the regular pointed-tip knives.
