A picture of a torch which symbolizes enlightenment is engraved in the middle of the coin. The lettering, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is engraved above the torch along the circumference of the coin. The lettering, "GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATH FREE" is engraved near the bottom of the torch. The mintmark, MM, is engraved in extremely small font at the very bottom of the reverse.
